De Romeinse Caesar met de Christusziel.
In Vuur bedwingt de Caesariaanse severitas de Christus-/
Dionysusziel; in Lucht daarentegen vermurwt deze laatste de eerste. Het Nietzscheaanse symbool van Vuur is dus de Romeinse Caesar met de Christusziel (in Zarathustra: de lachende leeuw met de duivenzwerm). Dat het een geval van bedwinging is moge duidelijk zijn uit het volgende fragment:
"Education in those rulers' virtues that master even one's benevolence and pity: the great cultivator's virtues ("forgiving one's enemies" is child's play by comparison), the affect of the creator must be elevated - no longer to work on marble! - The exceptional situation and powerful position of those beings (compared with any prince hitherto): the Roman Caesar with Christ's soul."

Het volgende fragment haakt hier direct op in (via het woord "ziel"):
"Greatness of soul is inseparable from greatness of spirit. For it involves independence; but in the absence of spiritual greatness, independence ought not to be allowed, it causes mischief, even through its desire to do good and practice "justice." Small spirits must obey - hence cannot possess greatness."

De vertaler, Walter Kaufmann, zegt hierover:
"This is one of the occasional passages in which it is tempting to translate Geist and geistig as intellect and intellectual; for these would come closer to Nietzsche's meaning here. [...]
This whole matter, of course, transcends philological niceties; what is at stake is one of the most crucial points of Nietzsche's philosophy: he was not an irrationalist."
Om rechtvaardig te kunnen zijn moet je intelligent genoeg zijn om het volgende te kunnen begrijpen:
"it is necessary to be merciless with men for the sake of a better future." [George Morgan, What Nietzsche Means, pagina 369.]
Ook in deze context geldt Heraclitus' dictum dat een droge ziel de meest wijze en de beste is.
Het omgekeerde is het geval in het geval van de duiven van Diana en de groene leeuw:
"Learn what the doves of Diana are, who conquer the lion with caresses; the green lion, I say, who in truth is the Babylonish dragon who kills all with his venom."
[Introitus apertus, hoofdstuk 2.]
Dit is een beschrijving van Sekhmet (de godin met de leeuwekop) die Hathor (Diana) wordt - door middel van bier...
"Bier en barmhartigheid komen bij elkaar."
